Data & AI for Canterbury businesses

Canterbury businesses are sitting on more than they realise. Let's find out what.

Stop the manual admin, get your reporting sorted, and turn your data into something you can actually use — with AI tools built in once the foundations are there.

AI is moving fast. The businesses that'll benefit most aren't the biggest — they're the ones whose data is in shape to use it. Most aren't there yet. That's the gap.

30 minutes. No cost. No sales pressure. You'll walk away with a clearer picture of what's possible.

Does this sound like your business?

If two or three of these land, you're in the right place.

You're not running a bad business. You're running it through fog.

Most business owners I talk to assume the problem is that they need more software, more staff, or more reports. It usually isn't.

The real issue is that your business has grown faster than your systems. Information ends up scattered — across Xero, spreadsheets, job management tools, your inbox, and one staff member's memory. You feel busy but blind. Reactive instead of planning ahead. Guessing more than knowing.

That's the fog.

Sort the foundations first. Build toward AI second.

Three stages. You can stop after any one of them. Most people don't.

Free first look

A free look at where your data, reporting, and systems actually stand — and a clear picture of what's worth fixing first.

  • A 30-minute conversation about how your business runs today.
  • A short written summary of the biggest gaps and the quick wins.
  • A clear recommendation on what's worth fixing first — and what isn't.
02
Get Sorted

Clean Up & Connect

Clean up the data, connect the systems, stop the manual work, and build reporting that actually gets used.

  • Stop the manual re-entry — if something's being done by hand that shouldn't be, we fix that first.
  • Data cleanup and integration between the tools you already pay for.
  • Dashboards that answer the questions you actually care about — revenue by job, profit by client, marketing spend by channel.

The AI Layer

Once the foundations are solid, AI becomes useful — not overwhelming. This is the part that compounds.

  • Forecasting: cashflow, demand, staffing, pipeline.
  • Anomaly detection so you catch problems before they cost you.
  • Practical AI tools built around your actual business — not generic chatbots.

The businesses getting sorted now will be noticeably ahead in two years.

AI capabilities are growing faster than most people realise — and the gap between businesses with a solid data foundation and those without is only going to widen. Cashflow forecasting that used to take a day. Pattern recognition across years of operational history. Tools that understand your specific business, not a generic version of it.

None of that works without clean, connected data underneath it. The Canterbury businesses that get that sorted now — even small ones — will have compounding advantages that are genuinely hard to close later. The window to do it without massive disruption is still open.

Practical tools, built around your business.

Not off-the-shelf software. Not generic chatbots. The things that actually fit how you work.

Automation

Workflow Automations

Lead follow-up, document processing, scheduling, alerts, payroll — anything repetitive eating time it shouldn't.

AI built on your own data — quoting tools, document analysis, internal knowledge bases, lead scoring.

Forecasting

Forecasting & Predictions

Cashflow forecasting, demand planning, churn prediction, anomaly alerts. Answers before you're asking the questions.

Integration

System Integrations

Connect the tools that don't talk to each other — Xero, CRMs, job management software, industry platforms.

Foundation

Data Cleanup & Pipelines

Sort the messy spreadsheets, build the pipelines, get your data flowing properly. The work everything else sits on.

Free 30-minute look at your business.

We have a 30-minute conversation. I ask you about how your business runs today — the tools, the spreadsheets, the reports, the stuff that drives you nuts. No prep needed from you.

A day or two later you get a short written summary of where things are costing you time or money, and what's actually worth fixing first. If there's something worth working on together, I'll say so. If there isn't, I'll say that too. Either way, the summary is yours to keep.

Currently working with a small number of Canterbury businesses on their first audits. Happy to add a few more.

A local operator. Not an agency.

I'm Jacob Banks — founder of Banks AI, born and raised in Canterbury.

I study Data Science at the University of Canterbury, and I built Banks AI because Canterbury businesses deserve access to proper data and AI work — without flying in a consultant from Auckland or paying enterprise prices.

I'm not a consultancy. I'm a local person you can have a straight conversation with, who understands this market and will tell you honestly if something is worth doing or not. I work with a small number of clients at a time, so you deal with me directly — not a team you've never met after the sales call.

You don't need to become a tech business to benefit from this. You don't need to understand how any of it works underneath. That's my job. Your job is running the business.

Canterbury, not Auckland

The businesses here have different pressures. I know this market because I live and work in it. Not someone who flies down once and sends emails from a hot-desk.

Data first, always

AI doesn't work on messy data. Most businesses aren't ready for it yet — and that's fine. I sort the foundation first, so whatever we build actually works.

Straight talk

Free first conversation. Clear picture of what's possible. If it's not worth doing, I'll say so. No jargon, no unnecessary complexity.

"But what about…"

The stuff people usually want to know before they book.

If you have enough moving parts that your reporting takes longer than it should and your data lives in more than one place, you're the right size. The businesses I work with range from a few staff to fifty. The principles are the same; the scale is different.

Totally fine. If you've got one specific process eating hours every week — chasing leads, processing invoices, re-entering timesheets — we can look at just that. You don't have to commit to the full foundation work to get value. Start with what's hurting, and we can see where it goes from there.

That's one of the most common things I hear. Usually it's because the dashboard answered questions nobody was actually asking, or it was built on data that nobody trusted. Before I build anything, we work out what decisions you want to make — then the dashboard gets built around that, not the other way around.

Good — most businesses aren't, and that's exactly the point. AI is the third stage, not the first. We start by sorting out your data and reporting. AI only comes in once it would actually help, which usually isn't on day one.

Everyone says this. It's almost always less bad than it feels. And even when it is genuinely messy, cleaning it up is literally stage two of what I do. The messiness isn't a reason to hold off — it's the reason to start.

Fair. A lot of people have. That's why the first step is free, short, and you get something useful out of it whether or not we work together. You're not signing anything to book a first look.

Perfect. Most of my work is making the tools you already pay for actually work together. I'm not here to replace your stack — I'm here to make it do what you thought it would do when you bought it.

The first look is 30 minutes. If what I find isn't worth your time, I'll tell you and we part ways. If it is, you'll have something concrete to act on — or ignore — at your own pace.

The first look is free. Beyond that, foundation builds start from $1,500, and ongoing retainers from $800 a month. Projects are scoped and quoted based on what you actually need — usually a fixed price for one-off work, or a monthly retainer if you want ongoing support. No surprises, no hourly billing on things that should be fixed-price.

Ready to clear the fog?

Tell me a bit about your business and I'll be in touch within one working day.

No prep needed. No sales pitch. We'll have a 30-minute conversation, I'll poke around the edges of how your business actually runs, and a few days later you'll have a short written summary of where the quick wins are.

If we're a good fit to work together, I'll tell you. If we're not, I'll tell you that too.
